'I am a very shy person in life'- Ranbir Kapoor

He is considered the future of Indian Cinema, the next superstar amongst other things. Ranbir Kapoor has always proved his brilliance with performances like Barfi, Rockstar, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. India Forums gets in a candid chat with the superstar of tomorrow. Tete-e-tete with Ranbir Kapoor:

After delivering super hits like Barfi and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, what are your expectations from Besharam?
Nothing at all. Commercially I have never expected anything. When we were making Barfi, we thought that it would do good 20 crores and would get critical acclaim. I think what audience finds good in a film on the big screen, actors and film makers can never know. Like with Besharam, we are thinking that its a masala film, action-comedy-romance, it has everything but I think at the heart of it, it has a story. With the love story, the drama, the action, the comedy you have to entertain the audience and be honest to yourself. I think that is what's important and of course the success of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has so many factors. Deepika and my pairing, the songs of the film, the genre, the timing of the release. When all of it comes together you get a super hit like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. I have been very lucky with the kind of film makers and actors I have got to work with.

This is the first time you're attempting this over the top genre. How easy or difficult was it?
I've tried it. I think it is a very tough genre. The amount of belief and conviction that you have to have to do this genre is immense. When you do films like Rockstar, Barfi, Wake Up Sid, there is a certain understanding when you work for a certain character. But when you play a larger than life character, he is a bit vulgar, repulsive. Its very hard. As an actor its very important that I challenge myself. I don't know, the audience might just hate me or hate the film but I think the risk factor is very important. When Abhinav came to me he had a small story prepared, then Rockstar released and he sent me a message praising my performance in the film. What appealed me in Besharam was the fact that it is not at all preachy. The subtext of the film is, there is no right way to do a wrong thing which I liked. I liked Abhinav a lot. For me its very important to like and be comfortable with the director because after all he is the captain of the ship. He is directing the film, he is telling the story, he will take me to a different world that he has envisioned. I don't think he wrote the film keeping me in mind. He cast me as an actor and its my job as an actor to do justice to it.

Your character in the film Besharam is a fan of Amitabh Bachchan. What was that one thing that you specifically did to get in the skin of the character?
Grow my chest hair ( Laughs). It took me 4 months to grow my chest hair. It was my idea only to make this character a Amitabh Bachchan fan when Abhinav was writing the character. He has posters of him in his room, he copies Amitabh Bachchan in his clothes, his hairstyle. When Abhinav came to me after I had signed the film, he said that the only preparation that I want you to do is to grow your chest hair because this character is a little vulgar, little repulsive. So it took a long time for me to grow it and I am very proud of it. I would not want to shave it off ever now.

How
was working with your father, the legend Mr Rishi Kapoor?
I was extremely scared. Till now I have never looked in my father's eyes. I am very scared of him. But I think on a film set, he becomes the character. There is a part of him that at this age, after working for 40 years is still so excited about film making and acting. It is the learning that is important. With everything he puts in so much effort to make it look effortless. I think that is a great quality. He made me feel comfortable, never intimidated me. I had to say things like, Mote, Dharti pe Bhoj to him. I was like, he's my father, I've never even looked in his eyes, how will I say such things to him. But he gave me the courage to do it, he was very happy with the script, the character. So it all went well.

You've worked with Anurag Kashyap as well as Abhinav  Kashyap. How different are they from each other?
Very different. One makes sunshine, happy entertaining films and one makes dark films. But as an actor I think its very important that I find a place and best support from both worlds. I had a great time working with both of them. Both of them are very honest to their work, are very hard working and they give a lot to an actor.

You're dancing on songs like Badtameez dil, doing films like Besharam, getting a tattoo that says Awaara and on the contrary you're a very shy person. So how do you balance the whole act?
I am a very shy person in life. I have to do these things, project a certain character and bring them alive on screen. I am happy doing it for the camera but if people really hang out with me in my life they'll get to know how shy i am. I like being at home, I am not a people's person, I get very shy around them, I stammer sometimes. But I guess you have to do all those things. You have to have conviction and belief as an actor to pull off these over the top things.

Recently, Salman Khan was all praises for you and said out and out that Ranbir Kapoor is giving all of us a tough fight...
This is the bigness of Mr. Salman Khan. He is not an insecure actor. He is encouraging new young talent. What he is said is such a nice and a correct thing. You hear rumours about people not liking each other but if you compete with each other in your work then nothing like it. Coming from Mr. Salman Khan, that is a very big compliment. Only 10 of my films have been released yet and I cant even consider myself in the same league as him. I think the true superstars of this country are Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan. They have constantly been entertaining the audience, giving big blockbusters. So if they talk about me, it gives me a very proud feeling but then I go back to myself. I get a reality check that I have a long way to go.

You're getting into production with Anurag Basu with the film,  Jagga Jasoos. Why did you plan on a new production house, Picture Shuru rather than taking RK Films forward?
First of all Anurag Basu and I are coming together and I believe that it should be equal right because I believe it is as much a director's film as an actor's film. I am very excited. Jagga Jasoos. Its a new venture, a musical, children would like it. I thought that both of us should produce it where we both have equal right. Where RK Films is concerned there are 4 partners, my father, both my uncles and my dadi. When we have a good director, then we'll produce a film in that manner. But I think its very important for Anurag Basu to get his fair share, so I am starting that film in November and I am very excited.  We're making a franchise, so probably we'll introduce the villain at the end of the film. It a big franchise, Sherlock Homes meets Austin Powers.

What all do you have lined up for us?
Bombay Velvet will come after this and the character that I am playing is very intense. He is a boxer. After that there is an Imtiaz Ali film and then a superhero film with Ayan Mukherjee which I will start end of next year. So I am trying to do different characters like in Besharam he is vulgar, loud. So I am trying, I am even trying to build my body for the last 6 years but doesn't happen maybe then I can do action ( Smiles). But then I also believe that intensity in action also comes from the eyes.

A super hero flick with Ayan...?
It is going to be a very different film which Ayan is developing. It is going to be a trilogy. It is going to be a fantasy film. He has just started writing the film. Ayan and I share a great working relationship as well as a personal relationship. He is going to go abroad and maybe do a post production course also. Hopefully we'll try and make something path breaking.

Have you ever identified with the characters you've portrayed on screen?
In the 10 films that I have done, I can somewhere only identify myself with Wake Up Sid and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Its the character that probably I have seen or maybe have been at some point in time. Otherwise all my other characters have been derived from the story and the director.

Your film Roy is slated for release next year, tell us something about that...
Its directed by a very close friend of mine, Vicky and I am playing a supporting character. The lead characters are played by Arjun Rampal and Jacqueline Fernandez. Vicky came to me and told me about it and as a friend, as an actor I appreciated the character but its not my film, I am just playing a supporting role.

There is so much said about your personal life everyday. Would you want to clarify anything?
There is so much being said about my personal life that I really don't want my life to become a reality show. Yes, Katrina is a very special part of my life but I think beyond that what I have learnt from my own life and experience is that when you're so open about your relationship and god forbid if it doesn't come to a marriage, I think there is so much judgement in this country about the woman in the relationship. I think one should protect that. When I am ready to marry someone I would not hide it from the world. When I was in a relationship earlier in my career and spoke about it so openly, a lot of spotlight went from my work to my relationship and it took away from my work. It is a catch 22 situation. As an actor you work hard your entire life for people to know you and speak about you and when they start doing that you want to shy away from them. I will try and protect the mystery of what I have in my personal life.

In today's time where the world is a walking ab- machine, how important do you think fitness is for an actor?
I play a street fighter in Bombay Velvet so I got a MMA trainer from Kenya an started building my body but now I have a 5 months break and in Jagga Jasoos I am playing a 12th standard boy in school so I have to become a little thin, shave and look like a 16 year old boy. So I am trying to go through a body transformation right now.  Fitness is ofcourse important as its a visual medium. Its important to look presentable but I keep telling my trainer that Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan never had a body and they are such big stars. So thats my excuse ( Smiles). But, in today's time and age it comes with a role. If you're playing a Ghajini and I am hadi paslee like this and I hit someone, you're not going to believe that. So I'll probably make a body for such a role. But right now the kind of roles that I am playing I am okay and I am happy. I keep picking roles where I don't have to build a body.

Ranbir Kapoor gets inked for ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’!

Ranbir was always against tattoos but seems like friend and director Ayan Mukerji has convinced him to get tattooed for his role in ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’. The movie stars Ranbir’s ex, Deepika Padukone.

The tattoo is a tribute to Ranbir’s grandfather, Raj Kapoor. However, it is not a permanent tattoo and is only for the role!

Notes on Indian Cinema

Awarapan - Mahiya
The shift to a mixed Arabic and Indian music is neither subtle nor gradual but in either case fantastic and another proof, if one is needed, that strong aspects of the longest cultural stretch in the world is integrating slowly from Morocco to the Central Asian Republics and beyond with infinite local and exceptionally rich regional colours, variety and flavour.
Definitely, performances that can be called 'dansongs', like 'Lovely', 'Mashallah' and 'Mahiya' are fresh and enchanting examples amongst many others.
A marked shift in the entertainment industry from traditional Indian dancing to vibrant waist dancing (belly dancing but more accurately 'hip swaying') is adding a much needed vigour and enhancement to traditional waist dancing in the Arab world, an ancient tradition institutionalised in ancient temples. However, traditional dancing should be maintained because it is part of culture. The trick is how to make it appealing to the young viewers. Somebody should have a brain storm and come up with a re-think and re-position.
Indian films appear to have been a stable offer in most Arab countries for at least 60 years. It is clear from comments left by Arab viewers on YouTube that actresses like Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, Shruti Haasan and several others are not just liked but loved.
For somebody used to western movies and serials I have found I've missed a great deal in the past 20 yeas. The guy who coined the word 'Bollywood' may have done the industry a dis-service. A copy is always a copy and Indian cinema isn't a copy of Hollywood and neither can force the different cultural taste on the audience of the other.
Hollywood actresses are handsome but many look 'lived in'. The freshness of many Indian, and Pakistani, actresses is genuinely fresh. There are no standards for femininity. All girls are females but not all females are feminine.
If a single comment is to be made both western cinema industry and its Indian equivalent are suffering from a miserable diet of mostly useless scripts. In Hollywood actors and actresses have become very expensive. Cutting costs is vital but it is unfortunate that the sword is falling on the scripts. The problem in Indian cinema is different. Maybe someone should study the emergence of Chinese cinema and look at traditional culture from new perspectives.
Added, maybe, is a belief that the audience is pulled to the song and dance as the strongest attraction. This is a point but the problem in most films is not the lack of scripts - a script is essential - but the lack of quality.
At the same time tragedies are a special genre. It doesn't make much sense to have a song and dance movie, like RamLeela or Ishaqzaade, then force the actors and actresses to artificially commit suicide. The ultra serious tragedies are neither missed nor can be considered entertainment. Bucketful of tears by the melting eyes of young girls over Juliet's fate is hardly entertainment. But then when you look at classical oriental love stories few end up with death and there is a reason for that.
The other point is that the value of increasing the open sexual content of movies is questionable as the movie industry cannot compete with the cheapest porn websites.
An alternative is to increase the artistic and innovative contributions. To make life easy for dancers, choreographers resort to known themes like swimming, cycling, diving, etc. Deepika Padukone's 'Lovely' theme is very provocative and appears to be a sex act in which girls are called upon to do the hard work of positioning while the male is having a break. This makes sense as the whole night is promised in the song and they won't be counting the stars.
In most cases, the talent and variety of Indian cinema are surprising. Greetings to all those we are making most of us happy.

Jogi-Mahi, Bachna Ae Haseeno
A masterpiece by Ranbir Kapoor and a masterpiece over all. The lyrics one of the best I've heard in Hindi films. Shame the name is not attested but here it is: Ms Anvita Dutt Guptan. Looks as if she wrote it during a dream. Three cheers for Anvita and three more for the brilliant Vishal Shehka, the music Director. If only Verde had thought of it.

Madamiyan, Arjun Kapoor, Shruti Haasan
Aagadu, Mahesh Babu, Shruti Haasan, Tamannah
Shruti Haasan is an astonishingly electric dancing with the swift steps of a sudden breeze. This lady is a formidable, hard working dancer with full body synchronisation and enough pheromones to fill Taj Mahal. Others in the field may have a good cause for worry but Bollywood has not given her the chance to prove herself, yet. For that to happen she needs a good script, a rarity in Bollywood. Another problem is that light roles in mushy films may brand her with lightness. She may become the sweetheart of millions of her admirers but it may be difficult to play serious parts if the category sets in. She plays the part offered nicely but this lady is no light performer and she seems very intelligent. She needs a script to prove it and she will succeed.

Tune Maari Entriyaan, Gunday, Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra & Irrfan Khan
Priyanka Chopra is definitely a multi-talented professional dancer and performer of the highest calibre. A sweet face will always leave a long term impression but so is a soft, sweet smile. When both are equally presented it is a pleasure to look at one of God's greatest creation - a woman. Her dancing is natural, relaxed and almost instinctive, with the full bonded body of a woman with a huge store of femininity marked by the occasional provoking naughtiness, when she feels like it. I'm not qualified to say whether Bollywood has been fair to her but the impression is that her talent may be less than at the full swing she deserves.
It is always a pleasure watching this lady so I don't know who has the heart and taste to vote her down. Could be other dancers.

Balam Pichkari - Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone
This song has one of the best introductory music I have heard for a very long time. Many Indians probably don't know how lucky they are to have a gifted composer like Pritam Chakraborty. Those who say the ultimate creativity is in the ultimate simplicity may be right.

Jaa Sajna Tujhko Bhula Diya - Movie Raja - Alka Yagnik & Udit Narayan
They had a row, so what? Couples bicker an average of 2,455 times a year. Money issues, laziness and not listening are among the top gripes for couples, say researchers. Snoring, driving too fast and what to have for dinner are also common sources of tension, a survey of 3,000 people found. It concluded that couples row as often as seven times a day. Nature is not stupid. Men and women are different but nature wants together so it devised a tried mechanism to help bickering couples - it is called sex. If the sex is not good enough it is OK to cry but remove the mascara and get dressed first. Of all animals on Earth only humans shed emotional tears. If crying for women is heartbreaking watch the tears of a man. They can call each other all sorts of reasonable names but threats with divorce and leaving should never be said. The relationship will never be the same and doubt has a natural habit of growing with time Still it is a moving song. Both are outstanding. Maybe we need to cry now and then but there are so many types of crying.

Arziyaan, Jigariyaa, Vikrant Bhartiya, Aishwarya Majmudar
So sweet, so touching, so innocent and so, so fresh. The sensitivity of the treatment of the scenes is a wonder. The 'East' is the longest stretch of culture in the world. The song and video segment could be in Fez (Morocco), in Qairawan (Tunisia), in Assiut (Egypt), in Gaza and the West Bank (Palestine), in Marjyoon (Lebanon), Hama (Syria), Mosul (Iraq) and in most of the Middle East.  Our minds maybe different but our hearts seem to be the same everywhere in the world. Three cheers for loving hearts.
Faraaz Ahmad your 'The heart bows to you' is original. I salute you and hope yours is also bowing to the one it decided to bow to. No other bowing should make a man or woman prouder.

'Lovely', Deepika Padukone (performer) | Kanika Kapoor (singer)
Ms Padukone couldn't have had a grander opening than 'Habibi', 'Aashiqui', 'Hayati'. It is even more ovational than Beethoven's fifth symphony. These three words are most popular in Arabic songs and daily usage. The fact that they are Arabic should not conceal the fact that the roots of these words are very ancient and definitely 10,000+ years. 'Habibi' is attested in Akkadian, the oldest attested language in the world. 'Hayati' is probably the oldest of the three and belongs to the first 50 words invented by human beings for a mother language the most important surviving granddaughter of which is Arabic. From the root of this word is 'hawa' 'Eve' the mother of all of us, Indians and non-Indians. 'Aashiqui' 'lover' but 'my inseparable lover' is more like it. The root origin is amazing. I can't tell you here what it is but I can assure you Ms Padukone has one and so are all girls, God bless them all. You can see what it is on this link if you are not very shy:

https://plus.google.com/100191404216524196296/posts/bJMGwQnudXb
But what is the fourth word 'Asidi'? We listened carefully to two different presentations of the dance and song and the word is 'nassibi' 'mine, my very own share of all men' with the double 's' pronounced a heavy 's' as in the English 'sub'. Some other Arabic words (such as 'rawhi' 'soul') are heard in the background and the mixed theme at the beginning has Arabian elements.
Arabic subtitling for the song is provided by Shah Rukh Khan Egyptian Fans Club. The impression one gets about the club is that it is large enough to ensure Mr. Khan the next Egyptian presidency when the current dictator general Sisi is removed.
The brief song in Arabic at the beginning says:
'My life has nothing in it without my God (Rabbi),
Nothing at all.'
The Arab affinity is probably natural since there appears to be a cultural stretch from Morocco to Afghanistan. Indian films are very popular in the Middle East and even this writer remembers Shammi Kapoor who died in 2011. The name 'Shammi' is 'a Damascene or Syrian' so it is easy to remember.
Whatever it is, it sounds fantastic. A great Indian contribution of pure pleasure. Our mother Eve must be proud Ms Padukone as one of her brilliant but modest and gentle daughters. Will see what Adam says when the tiff he had with Eve is resolved and she allows him to speak again.

'Kamlee' Full AUDIO Song - Kanika kapoor
Kanika Kapoor well done. You look as dangerous to men with weak hearts as you sound. Lots of old men would like to leave with a big bang not a whimper so give them the Soylent Green bang and let them whimper away happily and clear the place for the young.
Strange though, listening to Baby Doll one wonders who's more sexy the body swaying of the actress Sunny Leone or the vocal cords of Kanika. It probably depends whether your eyesight is better than your hearing or the other way round.

Manwa Laage, Happy New Year, Shah Rukh Khan, Arijit Singh, Shreya Ghoshal
This is an amazing song guaranteed to make you want to fall in love again preferably with the same woman. Most women are like wine they mature nicely with time and kindness but the man has to be careful and keep the flies away from his relationship. A single fly falling in a wine casket is sufficient to turn it to vinegar. Happy loving to all.

The other member of the fifth generation tribe of Kapoor
The one girl the gods of Sumeria and the Olympus would be scheming to kidnap is Sonam Kapoor (Phatte Tak Nachna). When she wants to, she can be an amazing dancer with brisk but elegant moves that match her elegant, mature body. She denies it, but one has to make a living at the end and prove one's self in the process, so whatever life there is in most scenes it is created by Ms Kapoor with very little contribution from her colleagues. She tries to enjoy herself acting which is not easy most of the time with the poor scripts. This fits the all in all impression of a girl/woman who's a breath of very fresh and very original air. Three cheers for the industry's cheer leader who should ignore the notorious pettiness of the industry and glamour away as much as she can.

Tum Hi Ho' Aashiqui 2 Full Song With Lyrics | Aditya Roy Kapur, Shraddha Kapoor
One wonders what other word would lovers use to describe their feelings? The fact that prehistoric people used the same word 'Ashiqui' to describe each other is a testimony of the power of love - real, eternal and soul binding. This word and 'ishq' were gifts by birds to human beings. That's the origin of the word - birds living in nests just human beings lived in little homes. If you wan to know the origin of this word you can visit this link.. You wouldn't regret it.

Hindi Songs for Applied etymology
Does Hindi contain what could be the diglossial core of common speech along the ancient trade routes of present day Iran and the Indian subcontinent some 5,000 years ago or more? Could it be equivalent to the ancient Ariba diglossia from which the scripted Assyrian, Babylonian, Arabic, etc., were developed? Could it be the origin of what is known as 'Indo-European' family of languages?
It is a fact that speech is much older than scripted languages. Years of investigation of Syrian and Palestinian dialects led to the conclusion that both dialects contain varieties of speech that may be considered closest to the prehistoric language initially developed in East Africa and matured into what is called 'Proto-Semitic' in southern Arabia. Both dialects are dominated by the bilateral rhythm of speech in tandem with the ancient roots of Ariba which are of two types - bilaterals and  mono syllabic root morphemes.
The Ariba (Semitic) is made of two distinct languages both represented in Hindi. The second is the Yemeni dialect with its distinctive 'p' and the hard 'g' roots, and the first 'Udite' language that gave the world some of the greatest words in common use today such as *IL 'God' (Il, Elohim, Allah), 'Ishq' and *ʼR the famous root of 'eros' and 'erotic'.
We are looking at a sample of some 20 popular songs and we are already surprised but we are even more surprised at the very close similarity of sign and body language with Arabs in general. We are applying the methodology that enabled the research team to crack the 'Semitic' code documented in the Origin of 'Semitic' Languages.
Our first surprise is the identification of a single ancient Yemeni mono syllabic root morpheme for Sindh, Hind and Indus *ND, possibly because they were considered a single region. The root is believed to have been invented to document crossing of the southern end of the Red Sea to Arabia. From the root is 'NDB' (NaDab) 'lament'. If 'bab' 'gate' is added to it we have 'bab al maNDab', the strait located between Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula and Djibouti and Eritrea in the Horn of Africa.
The question we are trying to find answers to is why this particular root is chosen. The questioning reason is that *ND is one root of a unit of two roots. The other is *DN which has several meanings including 'low, in a depression. If the Indian subcontinent is the low end, then the Himalayas are the higher end. We looked at the suggested etymology of the mountains but we are convinced. There are too many vowels and only three consonants, and it is far too large to be ancient compared to the nimble Hindi with generally smaller number of letters. Our initial guess is that the name is a triple compound: *HM, IL and é (also a and e): house, household; temple; plot of land. This was used to apply to houses of gods on mountains. It is Sumerian. IL is documented in Akkadian (God) and HM 'high, important'. We'll keep investigating.

Fevicol Se, Kareena Kapoor, Salman Khan
Men with weak hearts should watch Kareena Kapoor Khan sparingly with medicine within fast reach. Definitely hotter than any girl in Hell and cooler than many of those watching from balconies of heaven.Sex merciless machine with outstanding talent to thrill. I can read comments by Moroccan admirers describing Kareena as 'pure honeyyyyyyyyyy'.
The closest you can get to Madhuri Dixit but the distance is still significant. It may take a while but this girl is a unique, no-nonsense daring dancer with the lightening steps of a determined lioness and the mature bonded body of a woman radiating femininity not a teenager scantly clad with light flesh thinner the multi-layered makeup on the face. The double body tremors at the beginning of the dance is original and  a coffee spiller for the unwary.
With the exception of the very talented, hard working but cokiesh Ranbir Kapoor, and a couple of others, most actresses appear to outshine most of their partners and act more naturally and confidently. Most annoying are the occasional underside angle looks at actresses. They are nothing if not caricaturist.
Pity the video is darkish and overly reddish, a problem plaguing many videos in addition to arty-farty production gimmicks with no value-added perceptible benefit.

Birthday Special: Deepika Padukone Turns 30!
Deepika Padukone came from the sports background to the world of modelling and then Bollywood happened. Today, she stands tall as one of the strongest female icons of the nation. Her journey in showbiz, her drive to super stardom and further towards strength, beauty and grace, is truly awe inspiring. On her 30th birthday today, we take a look at 10 reasons why Deepika is an inspiration to many of us and why she sets your adrenaline pumping with her charm -
1. Top of her game and yet humble
Deepika inspires everybody with her modesty. She is known in the industry for her gentle, caring and down to earth nature. Even though she is at the top of her game at present, yet she is kind and humble. In the words of her rumoured boyfriend, Ranveer Singh, “Deepika treats everybody equally, she never discriminates between anyone, be it on the sets or anywhere else.” Well, he should know it better. Deepika has been quoted as saying,'When I go home, when we have no house help at dinner time, we lay our own table, make our own food, serve ourselves from the kitchen, sit at the table, eat and then we all have to wash up.  We divide the work. If my dad is clearing the table, I'll wipe the table, and mum is washing the dishes, I might empty the dishes, put it back in the fridge, that's how it is. In the Bengaluru house, it definitely works like that, even over here I am not dependent on my maids at all. If they are up, fine. If they are not, I can manage this house (her Mumbai house) on my own.’

2. Hardwork can break barriers
Deepika has accomplished the impossible and has established herself as a top star without having high profile connections. She has done it without having a long tail of recommendations tagging her, all with her hard work, dedication and the right attitude. As a child of a famous badminton champion, and a former national level player herself, she has certainly broken strong barriers and managed to reach the top of the industry by her hard work.
3. A proud feminist

In her own words- “New feminism isn’t about being aggressive; it’s about reaching the top yet being soft. It’s about being you — feminine, strong and full of will power”. Deepika has spoken at length about the gender issues. Through the support she has extended towards women’s rights, she is now a symbol of strength for all women.
4. Not afraid to experiment with her roles

Popularly known as the queen of versatility, Deepika Padukone never shies away from experimenting with her roles and looks. With no glamour associated with her role in Piku, she looked phenomenal in a Bengali character. In Tamasha, the leggy lass looked simply sexy and in the period drama Bajirao Mastani, she donned a traditional avatar and pulled it off brilliantly. Earlier, in Chennai Express, she depicted the role of a South Indian girl Meenama, then she played a Gujarati girl in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Raamleela and even went on to play a Christian girl in Finding Fanny.
5. Style and fashion icon

From a cautious dresser to a role model who has never failed to impress, Deepika Padukone often woos us with her appearances. She does not shy away from experimenting with her looks be it chopping her long locks for her role or wearing a six-yard drape, or even a ghaghra. She has made all a fashionable thing. In her umpteen appearances in the recent past, she looked comfortable sporting denim shorts. She has even managed to bring the retro look back with her detailed eye make-up in her very first film. Not just in movies like she did for her role in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani where she made the nerdy looking Naina sexy, but even in real life, you can spot Deepika having no qualms about sporting her black-framed glasses with her-uber stylish ensembles in public. Like her deep dimples even her chashmish look adds to her charm.
6. Opening up about ‘Depression’

The actress took the entire nation by surprise when in a heart-rending revelation; DP came out into the open and talked about her struggles with mental illness – Depression. When the actress on her way to roaring success, DP courageously stepped forward and broke her silence about the issue. She stressed on the importance of spreading awareness about mental illness in an exclusive television interview. Her reason to the same was to do away with the stigma attached with it.
7. Helping the cause with ‘Live, Love, Laugh’ Foundation

Deepika further decided to take her efforts a step ahead and launched a not-for-profit organization, ‘Live Love Laugh' Foundation. The organisation focusses on de-stigmatizing mental illness. On the launch of the organisation, Deepika said, “The fight against depression is a cause very close to my heart and is one of the largest health issues facing the country today. Having experienced depression in the recent past, I realise how difficult it is to recognise the problem, find information and get the right kind of professional help.” More Power to you gal!
8. Breakups to Makeup –Reinventing herself

Post her much-publicised breakup with Ranbir Kapoor, the actress went through a rough patch on a personal front, but held her head high and bounced back on the professional front, with double the zeal and hard work.  Her co-star and one-time boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor, during the promotions of Tamasha revealed, “Deepika has actually turned all her disadvantages into advantages!”  Speaking volumes for her work was when on Koffee with Karan Salman Khan expressed his desire to work with DP in the current of actress. Even Sanjay Leela Bhansali, her director in Raamleela and Bajirao asserts, “Deepika has never ever gone over the top with her role.”
9. Dignified calm about her relationship

The actress, who is rumoured to be in a steady relationship with Ranveer Singh since 2012, has decided to not make a circus of her private life and maintain a dignified silence about the same. Even their public affection and adoration for each other speak volumes; the actress is in no mood to let paparazzi enter her bedroom. The closest DP came to confess her relationship and summed up in a beautiful manner was when she quoted (to India Today), ““He is my best friend. I am emotional, sensitive and vulnerable and I hurt easily. I can be so naked in front of Ranveer and I know he will never hurt me or take me for granted. That is the kind of trust and understanding we have. The reason I love and respect him is that I can bare my soul and still feel comfortable. If this is a divine connection - then this is what it is.”
10 Female icon

Deepika in the truest sense is one of the strongest female icons we have today. In the world of glamour, it is difficult to find a woman of substance. And she truly is! Never shies to speak up her mind, takes failures in her stride, handles success with grace and accepts her weakness.
